Phone scam data » HMRC

The HMRC scam calls consist of someone claiming you are being investigated for committing tax fraud. You will be told in order to resolve the matter you need to pay over the phone. Threatening the recipient of the call with being jailed, fined, or taken to court is a standard practice from the scammers.

Many senior citizens, unfortunately, fall for this scam with the caller scaring them into believing they will be in a lot of trouble and a warrant issued for their arrest if they don’t pay. If the victim is unable to pay over the phone the scammer will instruct them to go straight to their bank and transfer to an account with the details they provide.

They will tell you if you hang up the phone you will be breaking the law. Sending a link to your phone is also a tactic used in these types of scams. The phishing tactic will ask you to click on the link to an HMRC agent.
