I was called from a landline number 01616695797. Knew my full name and said I'd been overpaid and owed money to one of 6 banks. When I asked who she worked for and her name and reference to note down she just gave me the 01422387713. Totally made up and con people. Just wish they could be prosecuted or fined for this type of con.

Yes, had the same problem today with this number, obvious con artist, couldn't answer specific questions, reading from his script. My favourite game with these type of people is to keep them on the line as long as possible, my record (so far) is 23 minutes. Don't give any accurate personal details, just do what they do, lie. If you're in the right frame of mind you can have a real good laugh out of them, at no cost to yourself!!
Also, if you have the number, ring it at a time that is convenient to you, witholding your own number, let them realise what it feels like to get unwanted calls at unwanted times.

    Hello!

I just got a call from this number claiming to be a consumer advice company and started asking me about 'the previous finance I had before 2009.' I stated I never had finance, so the operator put the phone down.

I hate thess people and the guys who sell them your phone number.

If you really want to get back at these people, simply fill in a load of online forms on un-reputable websites and put down their number as the contact, they will soon be receiving nuisance calls like the rest of us. I like to use midly offensive fake names to inflame the situation.

Like one of the callers above I do not answer numbers I don't recognise. I google them - and guess what - this was a dodgy number.
I also have my landline set up not to ring if calls are anonymous (but it still records the missed call). It's brilliant. It's really cut down on nuisance calls! I did this after receiving numerous 'number witheld' calls from 2 or 3 persistent nuisance callers. As I now don't answer I have noticed the number of anonymous calls has decreased dramatically. It seems that not answering is the only way of stopping these calls.
And yes - I am registered with TPS.

This number called me twice, once about my "mobile phone contract". Then about an "overpayment". When I wouldn't provide my new address because I expressed I didn't want to provide details until I knew what they were calling about, they hung up. Very dodgy

Just received a call from this number saying she was from the conser direct & I was possibly entitled to get money back from previously mis sold PPI, I told her it was very unlikely as I had never had any, she said it could have been given to me without me knowing and then she asked if I had taken any loans out previously, I said she ought to know that if she was offering to claim back money but she said she only had a list the bank had given her, so I asked which bank and she said that wasnt specified ! She said if we could just go through all my details to confirm who I was ! I said she should surely know who I was as she had just called me ! This is definately just a call from a company to get all of your details and sell them on !

This number called saying id made an over-payment on finance (i dont have any finiance) and she needed to get the money back to me. She asked for me to confirm my address/DOB. When i said i do not disclose any details over the phone she hung up. I rang back, she answered and i hung up.

I suggest for the people getting continuous calls to either answer the number with a sports whistle which they wont like or ring them at 3am and say your peace as they are probably home workers/scammers.

This number called our land line today (we are registered with the TPS, I hasten to add) and being wise to such things I did not answer, but did what I always do - googled the number, and found this (and other websites) who have had dealings with this number! My instincts were correct, which is good, but it's frustrating. However, they only called once and the number is now blocked (if your handset allows numbers to be blocked then block them - it has worked every time for me, and I've never had any number come up more than once; make yourself unavailable and you won't get 20 calls asking the same, or similar things (as others have reported). Why on earth would you let that happen?! And register with the TSP - mobile phones too; since doing so I haven't had a single scam/fishing text or call to my mobile, and I can count the calls to my land line on one hand in the last 6 months. Which makes days like today frustrating, but I have taken great delight in reporting them everywhere I can, so put that in your pipe and smoke it, whoever you are!

They rang on my mobile and I answered, they knew my first name but that's all they knew. They were fishing around without specifics hoping I would fill in the blank spaces. They said they were calling about a finance contract I had and money which was owed back to me. They didn't mention what type of contract or with which company. They just wanted to "check my address before organising my claim". I told them nothing and hung-up.

Feds arrested some guys that had to do with this number dor ID theft. They are Reactiv Media, The Warehouse, Gas Works Lane, Elland, West Yorkshire. Some calls were silent, no one would speak and some other would ask for personal information, usually banking info and they would call daily.

Had this number call me today and, as I did not recognise it, I did not answer. It went onto answerphone but nobody left a message. As with all numbers I do not recognise, I do not answer them. If it is a legit call for me, they will leave a message and, if it is not and they do not, I guess it is a cold call or some other nuisance company.

If you have free calls (eg free weekend and evening calls through BT) then phone them back (with 141 prefix) and tell them to check the TPS website before calling anyone.

If they ask for your postcode, refuse to tell them. Also refuse to give your number, or any other information about yourself. Simply state over and over again that they are required to consult the TPS website before calling any number. If they talk over you just keep saying "Dont't talk over me, listen to me" until they stop, then tell them again to consult the TPS website before calling any number. If they try to tell you it doesn't apply to them, eg because they are a marketing company, DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. Simply insist they consult TPS before calling anybody. Tell them that is why we sign on with TPS - we don't want to receive these calls.

If enough people keep doing that then perhaps they will get as fed up as we are and will consult TPS before calling a number, as they are required to do.

Alternatively, here is a script. I suggest reading it straight through, completely ignoring any interruptions, then hang up.

If they hang up before you do, then call them again, and repeat until you have been able to read it all or until you get bored. Don't forget to prefix your dialling with 141 each time.

    Here is the script:

    Hello there.

I am speaking on behalf of British Consumers in order to draw your attention to an organisation which will enable you to do your job better and vastly improve the reputation of your firm in the eyes of the public.

The name of that organisation is the Telephone Preference Service, TPS for short, and it can be found online by searching for TPS.

It is a legal requirement for telemarketers not to call a TPS subscribed number, however we are aware that you regularly ignore that requirement. It may be that you do not consider the law to apply to you, however I am here to advise you that it almost certainly does, and that if you continue to flout the law your firm can expect to be prosecuted and may have to pay an extremely large fine.

In the unlikely event of there being some valid reason for this law not to apply to you, then we would still advise you to recognise that does not alter the fact that members of the public who have gone to the trouble of registering with TPS do not wish to receive any cold calls, and therefore it would be far better, for the reputation of your company, to observe their wishes.

If you are not personally able to arrange for our advice to be considered then we strongly suggest that you communicate what I have said to your superiors as soon as possible, so that appropriate remedial action can be taken and further consequences averted.

    Thank you for listening.

Had a call from the above number didn't get to phone quick enough (it was on charge) they didn't leave a message but there was this phone number. As we used to live in the area where the STD is from we rang the number and spoke to a young man who said he was from Consumer something or another...didn't catch all he said as he must have been putting his hand over the mic.
He said that they were based in the Low Fields Industrial Estate in Elland which my husband knows very well and probably stumped him because as they chatted my hubby mentioned some companies he knew were based there as well but he was very vague but said that he thought he knew about them...then hubby asked about a specific place but he had no idea at all about it. That's when I became suspicious and why I'm here!
After reading all the above comments I'm glad we stumped him otherwise we may have been had!

I received a call this morning, nobody spoke when I answered, (probably checking if the number is live).
Checked on line when I found this useful site. So like others, I have listed as 'ignore' on my phone.
