Scam detected: PPI scam

⚠️ ️We have identified a high-risk PPI scam from the phone number 0161 321 7891. It's usually a recorded message informing you that you are entitled to a large payout for an accident that you had several years ago. The scammers cleverly interest you by offering you thousands in compensation.

The automated call is programmed to prompt a "Yes" response from you. This word is a trigger and will transfer the call to a human. The bogus employee will get you excited about the payment, insisting on a small setup fee to access the payout. When you pay the fee, you are unwittingly giving the scammer your credit card details, and they will clean your bank account.

  • Note that no insurance firm would ever call you to offer a payment in this way.
  • Always be suspicious if somebody offers you a large sum of money over the phone.

    1. Answer the calls "hello trading standards jeff speaking, whats your complaint?" they will scrub your number
    2. Put their phone numbers on free dating sites as a young lady looking for dates.
    3. Answer phone, dont speak, just leave near the tv. If every call takes 5 minutes before they realise your not coming to the phone it cost them time and money. they will delete you from their list

A recorded message beginning "Dear Customer...." has plagued us for weeks! We are bothered by these people daily - sometimes several times in one day. The TPS seems powerless to stop them. Is there any way to put an end to this nuisance?

Offering free boiler - message starts with "Hello, we've been trying to contact...." Same message from other numbers including international. They ring once or twice a day. Very irritation and obviously a scam as I'm noway entitled to a free boiler.

    News release: 30 May 2014

The ICO is asking for consumers’ help after a spike in nuisance calls selling boilers, insulation and solar panels.

The automated calls appear to be coming from 0161 or 0191 numbers, but initial investigations suggest the caller is using a false number. The number may also show up as being international on some phones.

Anyone receiving a call is asked to report it to the ICO.

Anyone who’s already engaged with the company or received a visit from someone representing them should call our Helpline, on 0303 123 1113.
Andy Curry, Enforcement Manager at the ICO, said:

“What we want to do is to stop these nuisance calls, but to do that we need the public’s help. If you’ve signed up to the TPS and you’re getting calls, or if you’re getting recorded message calls when you haven’t asked for them, then we need to know.”

“It looks as though these green energy initiatives and dubious scrappage schemes are becoming ‘the new PPI’, with more and more people receiving nuisance calls and texts about them. They are responsible for a significant chunk of the concerns we receive, and are a focus for our enforcement team.”

Text messages promoting green energy initiatives and so-called ‘scrappage schemes’ were responsible for 42% of concerns raised with the ICO between January and March. That coincided with a significant reduction in the number of concerns about messages relating to Payment Protection Insurance (PPI).

Earlier this month, the ICO warned two companies in Yorkshire and Devon they face fines totalling £140,000 for making nuisance calls. The ICO also raided a SIM farm in Wolverhampton which may have sent more than a million nuisance text messages

This number is calling everyday. We are a charity shop! We don't have a boiler to replace, we have nowhere to put solar panels and don't need wall insulation - and that's assuming we would ever be dumb enough to believe their scam message in the first place! They need to be stopped.

The reason nobody can call this number is that, despite the UK style, it's coming from abroad. I have BT caller display, which shows both the number and the word INTERNATIONAL. The UK number is being hijacked somehow.

This number is driving me insane, at least 2calls a day, also on a weekend . I have called my local telephone company which is kc hull. The only thing they can do is to supply a call blocker which at the moment is out stock. They have quoted a one off payment of £45. Which I will be getting when back in stock. The thing that outrages me is they call my 95 year old mum, anytime of day and night. Truthfully I really wish I could speak to them face to face.... So if anyone could let me know of their premises, I would happy to pop along . I doubt they even get anyone wanting a so called boiler from them.

In answer to the comments about TPS doing something about these calls; below is a quote from the TPS website :-
"The remit of TPS lies strictly within the boundaries of live unsolicited direct marketing calls. A call is considered to fall within the TPS remit if it is unsolicited, relates to the sale or marketing of a product or service during a live telephone conversation."
The key word here is "live". As these calls are from an automated source, it is outside the TPS remit.
Just to heap more pain those of us who suffer. I have just contacted my service provider (Virgin Media), who tell me that there is nothing they can provide to block the calls - apart from changing your number ... and even then they will get you again eventually. Any advice would be very welcome.

They break the law by calling a number registered with TPS and then expect people to take them seriously. Talk about thick-skinned.
