This text delivery system is rather basic, the BT server holds the message and gives the recipient various options eg listen, delete etc but needs you to key your choice, for it to work it can't listen to your own ansaphone message.
You also have an option to manage text delivery timings (they call it a "curfew") or opt out entirely, which many do.
As you say, it may have been spam but it's often someone you do know who's mistakenly sent a text to your landline.
By now you may have had a call from the sender asking "Didn't you get my text message?"
While BT owns the 0845 number, your contacts with other UK providers like Sky, Virgin, Talktalk will find their calls handled at some point by BT as it owns the bulk of the UK's network of cable/fibre/microwave and telephone exchanges.

About time the administrators of this site corrected some errors in the banner headline. It is not a BT scam. It is a text to landline audio service operated by BT for several phone providers. It is not a premium rate number. It is a business rate number and the call back charge is identified on the BT text service web page at 5p per minute plus network connection charge. No charge to answer a genuine call from this number and listening to the text. Be aware that scammers can spoof this number and spoofed calls using this number could be dangerous. This BT service will not filter out scam text messages but these are only dangerous to the most vulnerable members of our society. Anyone checking this number are urged to check the BT Text services web pages but these official sites will not tell you how to identify spoofed calls. This info is available way back under on this site and on some other sites.

This number has called me twice in one day professing to be BT voicemail with messages on my landline number. Don’t know why BT has phoned saying that I have 2 voice messages as I’m with sky and have been for years. Must be a scam

bt sms text relay service to landline converts sms to voice read out by a girl..means somone has sent text sms message to your home phone landline instead of your mobile possibly in error.

Like others, slightly muffled, but the recorded message pretends to be a BT voicemail service. I did press 1, but immediately realised that was stupid as I am not a BT customer. Looks like I didn't pick up any charge for the call though. Over the next twenty minutes they called twice more, but I immediately hung up each time.

Charged £1.33 plus VAT for calling this number twice to try and receive a text message.

This number is a scam. Pretends to be BTtext messaging system. It actually uses a copy recording of an actual BTtext messaging voice. In the same way as BT it instructs you to press 1 to hear the message, at this point it transfers you to a high premium call and politely requests you to hold. This does not happen on a genuine BT text message. I cancelled the call and blocked it straight away, however the few seconds that passed once I had pressed the “1” cost me 0.18p from my Virginmedia provider. Since then the caller has being trying to call sometimes over 10 times a day. Fortunately my Telephone system just blocks the call. This is a real money earner scam for those who set it up.

Errr - this number does not leave messages! It is an sms service operated by BT for several phone providers that relays an audio translation of a text someone has sent to your landline. It cuts out when an answer phone cuts in. If you answer it, a computer will tell the originating number of the text and you will have options what to do next. Scam texts are no problem unless you are very vulnerable and the originating number is the scam number not this relay number. Spoofed calls from this number could be dangerous so important to understand what a genuine call sounds like. Plenty of posts on this site and on other sites that provides further info about identifying a genuine call and blocking this number if that is what you want to do. Also check the BT web pages that a google search of this number will throw up.

Also, as this is a BT owned number (check their text service web page) blocking services may not always work but there are alternative means to block this number - many details are available on various web sites. This site provides a blocking service. Be aware that legit calls from this number will be when someone has sent a text to your landline although not all calls will be legit.
